Shrine Hike Traditional Streets Gion Evening

The iconic vermillion torii gates of Fushimi Inari Shrine

Morning

πŸŒ… Morning (aim for 10 AM)

Fushimi Inari Shrine

The iconic shrine with thousands of orange torii gates winding up the mountain. Yes, it will be crowded by mid-morning, but it's still absolutely worth seeing β€” the scale is incredible.

The hike: Full loop to the summit is ~2-3 hours. For families, doing the first 30-45 minutes gets you great photos without exhausting everyone. The higher you go, the fewer people you'll encounter.

Heat strategy: The torii gates provide partial shade. Bring water, take breaks at the small rest stops along the path, and turn back whenever you've had enough.

Tip: The shrine is open 24/7 and free.

Kiyomizu-dera Area

Head to the Higashiyama district. When it gets hot, duck into the many shops along the traditional streets.

Kiyomizu-dera Temple: Famous wooden stage with views over Kyoto. Worth the walk up!

Tip: The surrounding streets (Ninenzaka, Sannenzaka) are lined with shops and are great for escaping the heat.

Traditional Street Shopping

Browse the preserved streets leading to and from Kiyomizu-dera.

Look for: Pottery, fans, sweets, pickles, Kyoto crafts, matcha everything

Gion Hanamikoji Street

As it cools down, walk through Gion's most famous street β€” Hanamikoji-dori. This is the iconic geisha district with beautifully preserved wooden machiya townhouses, traditional tea houses, and an atmosphere straight out of old Japan. You may spot a geiko or maiko heading to an evening engagement.

Kawadoko River Dining

July is the season for Kawadoko β€” dining on wooden platforms built over the river! This is a uniquely Kyoto summer experience. Pontocho alley has several restaurants with Kawadoko terraces extending over the Kamogawa River.

What to expect: Enjoy dinner while sitting over the flowing water with a cool river breeze. Restaurants serve a range from casual to kaiseki (multi-course). The atmosphere at dusk is magical.

Tip: Reservations recommended for Kawadoko seating, especially on weekends. Ask for "Kawadoko" (川床) when booking.
