✅ Booked: Kyoto guided tour with Hiroyuki — 10:00 AM from hotel
Private guide Hiroyuki meets us at Hotel Nikko Princess at 10:00 AM and leads today's Kyoto highlights with local context and AC-paced breaks. The self-guided plan below is the backbone — Hiroyuki will tailor stops and pacing to the group and the heat. Before the day: re-confirm the lobby meeting time and grab his contact number.
Morning
Fushimi Inari Shrine
The iconic shrine with thousands of orange torii gates winding up the mountain. Yes, it will be crowded by mid-morning, but it's still absolutely worth seeing — the scale is incredible.
The hike: Full loop to the summit is ~2-3 hours. For families, doing the first 30-45 minutes gets you great photos without exhausting everyone. The higher you go, the fewer people you'll encounter.
Heat strategy: The torii gates provide partial shade. Bring water, take breaks at the small rest stops along the path, and turn back whenever you've had enough.
Tip: The shrine is open 24/7 and free.
Late Morning / Afternoon
Kiyomizu-dera Area
Head to the Higashiyama district. When it gets hot, duck into the many shops along the traditional streets.
Kiyomizu-dera Temple: Famous wooden stage with views over Kyoto. Worth the walk up!
Tip: The surrounding streets (Ninenzaka, Sannenzaka) are lined with shops and are great for escaping the heat.
Traditional Street Shopping
Browse the preserved streets leading to and from Kiyomizu-dera.
Look for: Pottery, fans, sweets, pickles, Kyoto crafts, matcha everything
Evening
Gion Hanamikoji Street
As it cools down, walk through Gion's most famous street — Hanamikoji-dori. This is the iconic geisha district with beautifully preserved wooden machiya townhouses, traditional tea houses, and an atmosphere straight out of old Japan. You may spot a geiko or maiko heading to an evening engagement.
Pontocho Alley Dinner
As it cools, wander Pontocho — a narrow lantern-lit alley packed with restaurants between the river and Kiyamachi. A great casual dinner spot tonight.
Note: Save your big riverside yuka/kawadoko terrace dinner for Day 6 (Jul 23) — that one's booked. Tonight, just pick a spot that looks good and walk in.
